SAINSBURY’S WIN FREE RANGE RETAILER OF THE YEAR!

Last week Sainsbury’s scooped the British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA) Retailer of the Year Award at their annual conference held at Stoneleigh Park.

Tom Vesey, Chairman of BFREPA on presenting the award to Annie Graham (Sainsbury’s Agricultural Manager) said “I was delighted that Sainsbury’s were given the award for best retailer of 2008. Over the years they have shown an increasing commitment to free range eggs, which is admirable, and their Woodland egg brand proves to consumers that bird welfare is important to them.

Sainsbury’s Woodland Eggs have been core to their strategy since 2004 and will be extended across stores early next year.  Chickens are descended from jungle fowl and are therefore instinctively much happier spending time in the shade of trees and hedges, dust bathing and foraging as their ancestors did.

But its not only the hens that benefits for the brand has formed a successful partnership with the Woodland Trust, the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, the Trust receives a 1p donation on every dozen eggs sold. To date, the charity has received over £300,000 to help fund tree planting projects throughout the country, a crucial step as the UK is currently one of the least wooded countries in Europe.

Farmers also benefit from the brand by being members of the Federation of Woodland Egg Producers, which aims to forge closer links with Sainsbury’s.  All woodland farmers receive a price premium, to compensate for the tree maintenance and additional welfare standards, thanks to a £1 million investment by Sainsbury’s and egg supplier Noble Foods.

Happier hens, happier farmers and a greener environment for all.
